Vehicle Categories

The Legal Driving Licence Regulation (RHLC) defines the vehicles that each category entitles you to drive in article 3. This article is summarised in the following table to make it easier to consult.





Category AM

Two- or three-wheeled motor vehicles, with the exception of motorised bicycles and light quadricycles, with a maximum speed limited by construction to 45 km/h and characterised by:

Being two-wheeled, by an internal combustion engine with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3, or whose maximum continuous rated power does not exceed 4 kW, if the motor is electric;

For three-wheelers, by a spark-ignition engine with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3, or by an internal combustion engine with a maximum net power not exceeding 4 kW, or with a maximum continuous rated power not exceeding 4 kW, if the engine is electric;

In the case of quadricycles, by a spark ignition engine with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3 or with a maximum continuous rated power not exceeding 4 kW, if the engine is electric or internal combustion, with an unladen mass not exceeding 350 kg.

It also authorises

Motorbikes with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 50 cm3 and agricultural vehicles category I.



Category A1

Motorbikes with a cylinder capacity of no more than 125 cm3, a maximum power of up to 11 kW and a weight/power ratio of no more than 0.1 kW/kg, and tricycles with a maximum power of no more than 15 kW.

It also permits

Vehicles in category AM.


Category A2

Motorbikes with a maximum power of no more than 35 kW, a weight/power ratio of less than 0.2 kW/kg, not derived from a version with more than twice its maximum power.

Also eligible for

Vehicles in categories AM and A1.


Category A

Motorbikes, with or without sidecar and motor tricycles.

It also authorises

Vehicles in categories AM, A1, A2.


Category B1

Quadricycles with a power not exceeding 15 kW and whose maximum unladen mass, (cuja masa ) excluding the mass of the batteries for electric vehicles, does not exceed 400 kg or 550 kg, depending on whether they are intended for the carriage of passengers or goods.


Category B

Motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3500 kg, which are designed and built to carry a number of passengers not exceeding eight, excluding the driver, to which a trailer with a maximum mass of up to 750 kg or more may be attached, provided that the maximum mass of the combination does not exceed 3500 kg.

It also authorises

Vehicles in category AM;

Vehicles in category A1, if the holder is over 25 or, if not, if they have category AM or a moped driving licence;  5 

Tricycles with a motor power exceeding 15 kW, if the holder is over 21 years old;

Vehicles in category B1;

Agricultural vehicles in categories I and II;

Light industrial machinery;



Category BE

Coupled vehicle combinations consisting of a category B tractor vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3500 kg.

Also authorised

Agricultural or forestry tractors with a trailer or with towed agricultural or forestry machinery, provided that the maximum mass of the combination does not exceed 6000 kg.


Category C1

Motor vehicles other than those in categories D1 or D, with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3500 kg and less than 7500 kg, designed and constructed to carry a number of passengers not exceeding eight, excluding the driver; a trailer with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg may be coupled to these vehicles.


Category C1E

Coupled vehicle combinations consisting of a category C1 tractor vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg, provided that the maximum mass of the combination formed does not exceed 12,000 kg; coupled vehicle combinations consisting of a category B tractor vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3,500 kg, provided that the maximum mass of the combination formed does not exceed 12,000 kg.

It also authorises

Coupled vehicle combinations in category BE;

Sets of coupled machinery consisting of a tractor or industrial machine with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3500 kg and less than 7500 kg, and a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg, provided that the maximum mass of the set formed does not exceed 12000 kg.



Category C

Motor vehicles other than those in categories D1 and D, the maximum authorised mass of which exceeds 3500 kg, designed and constructed to carry a number of passengers not exceeding eight, excluding the driver; a trailer with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg may be coupled to these vehicles.

It also authorises

Vehicles in category C1, agricultural vehicles in categories I, II and III and heavy industrial machinery.


Category CE

Coupled vehicle combinations consisting of a category C tractor vehicle and a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg.

Coupled vehicle combinations in category C1E;

It also authorises

Coupled vehicle combinations in category DE, provided the holder has category D;


Category D1

Motor vehicles designed and built for the carriage of no more than 16 passengers, excluding the driver, with a maximum length of no more than 8metre; a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of no more than 750 kg may be coupled to these vehicles.


Category D1E

Coupled vehicle combinations consisting of a category D1 tractor and a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg.

Also authorised

Coupled vehicle combinations in category BE;

Coupled machinery combinations consisting of a tractor or industrial machine with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3500 kg and less than 7500 kg, and a trailer or semi-trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg, the maximum mass of the combination not exceeding 12000 kg.


Category D

Motor vehicles designed and built for the carriage of more than eight passengers, excluding the driver; these vehicles may be coupled to a trailer with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg.

It also authorises

Vehicles in category D1, agricultural vehicles in categories I, II and III and heavy industrial machinery.




Category DE

Coupled vehicle combinations consisting of a category D tractor vehicle and a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg.

Also authorised

Coupled vehicle combinations in category D1E.


Category Agricultural Vehicles Category I

Motor cultivators with trailers and tractor-trailers, provided that the maximum mass of the combination does not exceed 2,500 kg.

Also authorised

Industrial machinery with a gross weight not exceeding 2500 kg.


Category Agricultural Vehicles Category II

Simple agricultural or forestry tractors or tractors with mounted equipment, provided that the maximum mass of the combination does not exceed 3500 kg;

Agricultural or forestry tractors with a trailer or towed agricultural or forestry machinery, provided that the maximum mass of the combination does not exceed 6000 kg;

It also authorises

Agricultural vehicles in category I;

Light agricultural or forestry machinery with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3500 kg;

Tractor-trailers with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3500 kg.



Category Agricultural Vehicles Category III 

Agricultural or forestry tractors with or without trailers and heavy agricultural machinery.

It also licences

Agricultural Vehicles in categories I and II.
