HORN
How to use audible signals correctly while driving in Portugal.
One: General Rules for Using Audible Signals
In Portugal, Audible signals should be used only briefly or shortly and only in specific situations. Whenever possible, it's recommended to replace the horn by using light signals, like switching between low and high beams so as not to cause glare. This helps to avoid unnecessary noise and ensures safety without causing glare.
Two: Using Audible Signals Within Localities.
Within localities, the rules are even stricter. During the day, you can use your horn in cases of imminent danger. However, at night, you should replace the horn with light signals to avoid disturbing the peace."
Three: Using Audible Signals Outside Localities
Outside localities and on other roads, you can use your horn both day and night if necessary. But again, lights are preferred whenever it is possible. You can use the horn to signal imminent danger, alert other drivers in places of poor visibility like bends and speed bumps, and to indicate your intention to overtake the vehicle in front of you."
Four: Conditions for Using Audible Signals
Here is a list of specific conditions where we can use the horn
A. They must be brief.
B. They are only permitted in cases of imminent danger, to warn a driver of the intention to overtake, or at bends, crossroads, junctions, and speed bumps with reduced visibility.
C. These rules do not apply to police vehicles or vehicles providing assistance or urgent services in the public interest.
Five: Special Audible Warning Devices
Special audible warning devices, such as sirens………
May be used by police vehicles and those providing urgent services. The characteristics and conditions for these are laid down in regulations. Importantly, these devices or similar sound signals are not permitted on any other vehicles.
To summarize, use your horn only when absolutely necessary and replace it with light signals whenever possible. This not only ensures compliance with Portuguese law but also contributes to a quieter and safer driving environment for everyone.
